Construction steps for cable tray bends

Cable tray bends are created by carefully marking, cutting, and forming the tray to achieve smooth directional changes while maintaining structural integrity and cable support.

Tools and Materials Needed

Galvanized sheet or pre-fabricated tray sections (1. 6 mm or as per design)Measuring tape or scaleMarker or scriberAngle grinder, metal shear, or hand fileDrill machineRivets, nuts, and boltsBending tools (manual bender or hydraulic press brake)Welding machine (optional for reinforcement)Protective equipment (gloves, goggles)Step-by-Step Construction1. Marking the Bend Decide the bend angle (commonly 45° or 90°).

Mark the centerline and sides of the tray. Divide the curve into equal segments to form a smooth radius, ensuring uniformity for cable support. 2.

Cutting the Tray For flat or ladder trays, cut triangular or rectangular sections on the side walls where the bend will occur. This allows the tray to fold without deforming. For wire mesh trays, cuts can be made live on-site using a bolt cutter, which preserves the protective zinc layer.

3. Forming the Bend Use a manual bender, press brake, or blunt object to gradually bend each section to the required angle. For flat 90° bends, flatten the tray lip at the bend point before folding, then bolt or weld the parts together.

4. Rejoining and Reinforcing After bending, rejoin the cut sections using welding or bolting with metal strips for reinforcement. For flat bends, measure the internal edges and fabricate a gusset to secure the bend.

5. Final Assembly Ensure all edges are smooth and protected. For wire mesh trays, rubber caps can be used to cover cut ends.

Verify the bend maintains the correct angle and radius to prevent cable stress.

Tips for Best Results

Maintain consistent bending radius to avoid sharp corners that can damage cables. Use proper protective equipment when cutting or grinding. For ladder trays, professional fabrication techniques ensure precise bends and clean installations.

Consider modular or pre-fabricated bends for high-capacity industrial installations to save time and maintain quality. By following these steps, you can construct safe, durable, and professional cable tray bends suitable for industrial, commercial, or residential electrical installations.
