How to configure a bandwidth aggregation switch

To configure a bandwidth aggregation switch, use Link Aggregation (LAG) with LACP to combine multiple ports, increasing throughput and providing redundancy.

Understanding Link Aggregation

Link Aggregation (LAG) allows you to combine two or more Ethernet ports into a single logical link, which increases total bandwidth and provides failover if one link fails.

LA

G is commonly used for: Switch-to-switch connections to handle higher traffic loads. Switch-to-client connections for high-performance devices like NAS servers or file servers.

LA

G can be managed using LACP (802. 3ad), which dynamically negotiates aggregation and ensures both ends of the link are correctly configured.

Step-by-

Step Configuration on UniFi SwitchesVerify Device Support: Ensure your switch and connected devices support LACP.

Recommended Uni

Fi devices include UDM Pro, UDM SE, and USW-Aggregation. Connect Ethernet Cables: Plug two or more Ethernet cables into the ports you plan to aggregate. Use high-quality cables (CAT6 or better) to avoid bottlenecks.

Access Uni

Fi Controller: Open the UniFi Network Controller software and log in. Select the Switch: Navigate to Devices, click on your switch, and go to Ports. Choose Ports for Aggregation: Select sequential ports (e.g., ports 3 and 4).

Non-sequential ports will not work.

Enable LAC

P: Click Edit, select Aggregate, and enable LACP. Assign a friendly name to the Link Aggregation Group (LAG), such as "NAS-Agg". Configure the Connected Device: If connecting to a NAS or server, enable LACP in its network settings to match the switch configuration.

Apply Changes: Click Apply and wait for the controller to update. Verify that both ports are handling traffic using the port statistics. Monitor Performance: Use the UniFi Controller to check traffic distribution and ensure redundancy is functioning correctly.

Best Practices

Start with the furthest switch from the gateway and configure downstream first, then move upstream. Sequential port numbering is required for LAG.

Use LAC

P instead of static LAG to avoid misconfigurations and enable automatic failover. For high-throughput connections, consider SFP+ ports for uplinks between aggregation switches. Keep firmware updated to ensure optimal performance and security.

By following these steps, you can successfully configure a bandwidth aggregation switch, increasing network throughput and providing redundancy for critical devices.
