Optical fiber pigtail sequence

The optical fiber pigtail sequence involves matching each fiber strand by color from the pigtail to the corresponding strand in the trunk cable to ensure accurate, low-loss connections.

Understanding Fiber Pigtails

A fiber optic pigtail is a short length of optical fiber with a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other end. The connector end plugs into equipment or an optical distribution frame (ODF), while the bare end is designed for fusion or mechanical splicing to the incoming fiber cable in the field. Pigtails are commonly used in single-mode and multi-mode networks, and they provide factory-grade connector quality combined with field flexibility.

Color-

Coded Sequence for Multi-Strand PigtailsWhen splicing multi-strand pigtails (e.g., 12-strand or 24-strand), each fiber must be matched according to a standard color sequence to maintain proper port mapping. The typical 12-strand color sequence is: BlueOrangeGreenBrownSlate (Gray)WhiteRedBlackYellowVioletRose (Pink)Aqua This sequence ensures that Port 1 on the local end corresponds to Port 1 on the remote end, preventing crossed fibers and signal misrouting. For 24-strand pigtails, the sequence repeats with a second set of 12 colors, often using a stripe or marking to differentiate the second group.

Splicing Process

Prepare the fibers: Strip the protective coating from both the pigtail and trunk fibers, clean them with isopropyl alcohol, and cleave them to the correct length. Align fibers in the fusion splicer: Place the bare ends of the pigtail and trunk fiber into the splicer, ensuring proper alignment. Fusion splice: Activate the splicer to fuse the fibers, creating a low-loss, permanent joint.

Protect the splice: Place the fused fiber into a splice protector or heat-shrink sleeve to prevent breakage. Organize in splice tray: Route the fibers neatly in the tray according to the color-coded sequence to maintain order and facilitate future maintenance.

Best Practices

Use pre-sorted pigtail kits to reduce handling errors and speed up installation. Keep fibers clean and dust-free to minimize insertion loss. Verify each splice with an optical power meter or OTDR to ensure low-loss connections.

Maintain proper bend radius to prevent microbends or signal degradation. By following the color-coded sequence and proper splicing steps, technicians can ensure reliable, high-performance fiber optic connections in data centers, FTTH deployments, and enterprise networks.
