Interface of optical module of ring network switch

To connect an optical module in a ring network switch, insert the SFP module correctly, attach the fiber cables according to labels and orientation, and ensure secure, professional-grade connections. Step 1: Prepare the Optical ModulesObtain the optical modules from the fitting kit or packaging. Ensure the modules are certified for your switch model to maintain transmission reliability and service stability.

Avoid touching the edge connector and always handle modules with ESD protection, such as a wrist strap or gloves. Keep dust plugs on idle ports until ready to connect fibers. Step 2: Insert the Optical ModulesIdentify the SFP ports on your switch (e.g., SFP1 and SFP2).

Orient the module correctly: some ports require the label facing upward, downward, or leftward depending on the port. Gently push the module into the port until you hear a click, indicating it is securely seated. Test the module by gently pulling it; if it does not move, it is properly installed.

Step 3: Connect Fiber CablesUse preinstalled optical jumpers or prepared fiber cables. Match the labels on the optical modules and cables to ensure correct transmit/receive alignment. Route the fiber cables carefully to avoid sharp bends or stress; the fiber's hardness requires careful handling.

Only trained professionals should splice or terminate fibers. Step 4: Complete the Ring ConnectionIn a ring topology, each switch connects to two neighboring nodes using two fiber cables for redundancy. Connect one fiber to the previous node and the other to the next node, ensuring the ring is closed.

For single-strand setups using 1000BASE-BX, ensure paired modules (-D and -U) are correctly installed for bi-directional communication. Step 5: Verify and SecureCheck that all modules and cables are securely seated and properly labeled. Reinstall any cable fasteners or mechanical parts in the cabinet.

Measure input optical power to ensure it is within the normal range before activating the link. Keep dust plugs on unused ports to prevent contamination.

Safety Considerations

Never look directly into the optical module or fiber ends; laser radiation can cause eye damage. Avoid forcing modules into ports; if insertion fails, rotate the module 180° and try again. Handle fibers and modules gently to prevent damage to the transceiver or switch port.

Following these steps ensures a reliable, safe, and functional optical connection in a ring network switch, maintaining redundancy and network uptime.
