Methods for reading optical power meters

An optical power meter displays the strength of light in dBm, which represents the power relative to 1 milliwatt, and accurate readings require proper wavelength selection, connector cleanliness, and calibration.

Understanding the Display

Optical power meters typically show readings in dBm, which is a logarithmic unit representing power relative to 1 milliwatt. For example, 0 dBm equals 1 mW, +10 dBm equals 10 mW, and -10 dBm equals 0. 1 mW.

The meter may also display dB, which is a relative measurement comparing the measured power to a reference level you set, often used to calculate insertion loss or fiber attenuation.

Steps to Take Accurate Measurements

Turn on and warm up the meter: Most meters need a brief stabilization period (1–2 minutes) for reliable readings. Set the correct wavelength: Optical power meters are calibrated for specific wavelengths. Matching the meter to the signal wavelength ensures accurate readings.

Clean connectors and adapters: Dust or dirt on fiber end-faces can introduce significant measurement errors, sometimes appearing as 1–5 dB loss. Use lint-free wipes or click-to-clean tools. Connect the fiber: Attach the fiber to the meter probe.

If measuring source power, connect a reference patchcord; if measuring at the receiver, disconnect the fiber from the receiver. Read the display: The meter converts the light detected by a photodiode into an electrical signal, amplifies it, and shows the optical power in dBm or relative dB.

Interpreting the Reading

Absolute power (dBm): Indicates the actual optical power at the fiber end. Typical values for telecom lasers are 0 to -10 dBm, while LEDs may be -10 to -20 dBm. Relative power (dB): Shows the difference between the measured power and a reference, useful for calculating losses across connectors, splices, or fiber segments.

A negative dB value indicates loss, while a positive value indicates gain relative to the reference.

Tips for Reliable Measurements

Always clean connectors before each measurement. Calibrate the meter regularly to maintain accuracy. Verify wavelength settings for each test session.

Understand that connector contamination or wrong wavelength can give confidently incorrect readings, even if the meter is functioning properly. By following these steps and understanding the meaning of dBm and dB readings, you can accurately read and interpret the optical power in fiber optic systems.
