Wavelength of the gray light module

Gray light modules emit light with wavelengths that fluctuate within a broad range, typically in the near-infrared optical communication windows, without a fixed standard wavelength.

Wavelength Characteristics

Gray light modules, also known as white light or standard optical modules, do not have a strictly defined center wavelength. Instead, their wavelength fluctuates within a certain range, generally within the low-loss optical windows used in fiber communication, such as 850 nm, 1310 nm, 1490 nm, or 1550 nm. The fluctuation range is typically around ±40 nm, allowing the module to operate effectively without precise wavelength control.

This is in contrast to colored light modules, which have tightly controlled wavelengths for WDM systems.

Applications

Gray light modules are commonly used on client-side optical ports of WDM devices, where precise wavelength alignment is not required. They are suitable for standard point-to-point connections, Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and other short- to medium-distance optical links. Because they do not need to match a specific wavelength, gray light modules are generally less expensive than colored light modules.

Comparison with Colored Light ModulesGray Light Module: Wavelength fluctuates within a broad range; used on client-side ports; cannot be directly multiplexed in WDM systems; lower cost. Colored Light Module: Wavelength is strictly controlled around a standardized center; used on line-side ports; compatible with CWDM or DWDM multiplexers; higher cost.

Summary

Gray light modules operate in the near-infrared spectrum (850–1625 nm), with non-standardized, fluctuating wavelengths, making them ideal for general optical communication where precise wavelength control is unnecessary. They are distinct from colored light modules, which are designed for WDM systems with strict wavelength specifications.

Gray light module wavelength

The grey transceiver is not color-coded because it only uses one wavelength of light. The most common wavelengths used by grey transceivers are 850nm, 1310nm, and 1550nm.

A Quick Guide to Gray Light Module and Colored Light Module

The wavelength range used in optical communication is 850 ~ 1650 nm, and the optical module emits “color light” or “white light”, which are invisible to human eyes.

Light and Technology: What is the difference between gray

It only depends on whether the wavelength fluctuates within the low-loss window. The fluctuation range of the wavelength is generally around ±40nm. For example, as long as it is within the...
