Principle of Canadian Fiber Optic Temperature Measurement Cable

Canadian fiber optic temperature measurement cables operate on the principle of distributed temperature sensing using optical fibers, detecting temperature changes via backscattered light and Raman spectroscopy.

Working Principle

The core principle of fiber optic temperature measurement is distributed temperature sensing (DTS), where a conventional optical fiber acts as a linear sensor along its entire length. A short laser pulse is injected into the fiber, and the backscattered light is analyzed. Temperature is determined by Raman scattering, which produces Stokes and anti-Stokes signals.

The ratio of these signals varies with temperature, allowing precise calculation of the temperature at each point along the fiber. The location of the temperature measurement is determined by the time-of-flight of the light pulse, considering the propagation speed in the fiber.

Measurement Methods

Two main methods are used depending on the application: Gradient Method: Applied when the temperature difference between the fiber environment and the target (e.g., seepage water) is significant. A leak or thermal anomaly is detected by a change in the temperature gradient along the fiber. Heat Pulse Method (HPM): Used when temperature differences are small or constant, such as in closely spaced water bodies.

A controlled heat pulse is applied, and the resulting temperature change is measured along the fiber.

Accuracy and Resolution

Modern fiber optic systems can measure temperatures with accuracy better than 0. 1°C and spatial resolution around 0. 7–1 m for cable lengths up to 10 km, with some systems capable of monitoring distances over 30 km.

The measurement is continuous along the fiber, providing a linear temperature profile rather than discrete point measurements. AdvantagesNon-electrical and immune to electromagnetic interference, making it suitable for high-voltage, MRI, or explosive environments. Can be embedded in structures or soil for long-term monitoring.

Enables precise leak detection, structural monitoring, and environmental sensing over large areas.

Applications

Canadian fiber optic temperature cables are widely used in: Environmental monitoring: Detecting leaks in landfills or pipelines. Industrial processes: Monitoring high-voltage equipment, chemical plants, or nuclear facilities. Structural health monitoring: Embedded in concrete or soil to detect temperature changes and strain.

In summary, the Canadian fiber optic temperature measurement cable leverages laser pulse backscattering and Raman spectroscopy to provide high-resolution, distributed temperature sensing along long fiber lengths, offering precise, non-invasive, and interference-free monitoring for industrial, environmental, and structural applications.
