Installation of horizontal and vertical grid cable trays

Horizontal cable trays are installed flat with grouped cable fastening, while vertical trays require individual cable securing with stainless steel strips, both supported by engineered structures and spaced according to load and tray type.

Horizontal Cable Tray Installation

Layout and Preparation: Review approved shop drawings to determine tray routes, lengths, and locations. Ensure routes avoid clashes with other services and maintain sufficient clearance for cable pulling and future maintenance. Materials should be inspected for damage and stored horizontally on a flat surface with timber supports at 1-meter intervals to prevent deformation.

Support and Fixing: Horizontal trays are typically installed flat under floors, walkways, or on pipe racks. Fix trays onto standard steel shapes, welded steel structures, or concrete using self-drilling dowels. Maximum support spacing: 3 meters for ladder-type trays and 2 meters for perforated trays to prevent strain.

Cable Securing: Cables laid flat in horizontal trays are fastened in groups, typically one fastening every 2–3 meters. Perforated or ladder-type trays are preferred to allow water drainage and easy cable fastening.

Vertical Cable Tray Installation

Orientation and Support: Vertical trays or edgewise horizontal trays are installed only in special cases where space or design constraints exist. Trays must be self-supporting with wide flanges (48mm, 72mm, or 100mm) suitable for the cable cross-section. Cable Securing: Each cable in vertical trays is individually fixed using 20mm wide stainless steel strips, with two strips per meter.

This ensures cables remain secure and maintain proper bend radius, preventing damage or stress on the conductors. Load and Safety Considerations: Trays should be designed to carry a load of 100 kg/m, with perforated or ladder-type construction to avoid water retention. Installation must comply with local electrical codes, safety regulations, and project-specific standards such as NEMA VE1, VE2, or ARAMCO standards.

General Best Practices

Ensure qualified personnel perform installation according to a pre-determined layout plan. Maintain proper clearance from other services and allow access for maintenance. Use appropriate materials (galvanized steel, stainless steel, or aluminum) based on environmental conditions.

Inspect and verify all components before installation to prevent damage and ensure compliance with project specifications. By following these methods, both horizontal and vertical cable trays can be installed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards, ensuring long-term reliability and ease of maintenance.
