Spacing between power distribution boxes and distribution rooms

Minimum clearances for power distribution boxes and electrical rooms are governed by NEC and UL standards, typically requiring 3 feet front clearance, 30 inches side clearance, 6. 5 feet headroom, and specific spacing between live parts of distribution blocks.

Electrical Room and Panel Clearances

Electrical rooms must provide adequate working space for safe operation, maintenance, and inspection.

According to NE

C 110. 26, the minimum clearances in front of panelboards are 3 feet (914 mm) deep, 30 inches (762 mm) wide, and 6. 5 feet (≈2 meters) high, with doors able to open at least 90°.

Side clearances should be at least 30 inches or the width of the equipment, whichever is greater, and dedicated space from the floor to 6 feet above the equipment is required. For rows of equipment in electrical rooms, aisles between live parts on both sides must be at least 4 feet wide, increasing with voltages above 600V. Power Distribution Block (PDB) SpacingFor power distribution blocks, spacing requirements depend on UL standards and the NEC.

UL508A specifies that feeder circuits require 1 inch through air and 2 inches over surface spacing at 600V.

Listed PD

Bs (UL1953) meet these spacing requirements for general installation, while recognized terminal blocks (UL1059) must comply with spacing rules for field wiring applications. The spacing ensures safe separation between uninsulated live parts, grounded parts, and opposite polarity conductors, preventing short circuits and electrical hazards.

Additional Considerations

Mounting height: Panelboards should not exceed 6 feet 7 inches (2 meters) above the floor. Equipment in front of panels: No device, except meters, should extend more than 6 inches beyond the panelboard front. Electrical room design: Rooms may require reinforced floors, ventilation, fire suppression, and grounding provisions to accommodate heavy transformers, switchgear, and busbars.

Voltage and current ratings: Spacing may vary depending on voltage, continuous current, and short-circuit current rating (SCCR) of the PDB.

Summary

To ensure safety and compliance: Maintain 3 feet front clearance, 30 inches side clearance, and 6. 5 feet headroom for panels. Ensure aisles of at least 4 feet between rows of live equipment.

Follow UL508A and UL1953 spacing for PDBs: 1 inch through air, 2 inches over surface at 600V. Provide dedicated space from floor to 6 feet above equipment and avoid obstructions in front of panels. These clearances allow safe access, maintenance, and operation of power distribution systems while meeting NEC and UL standards.
