Drop cable fiber optic connection

Fiber optic drop cables connect the main distribution network to individual premises, forming the critical last segment of an FTTH network.

Overview of Fiber Optic Drop Cables

A fiber optic drop cable is the final link between the distribution network (such as a Fiber Access Terminal or Fiber Distribution Box) and the subscriber's premises, connecting to an Optical Network Unit (ONU) or Optical Network Terminal (ONT) inside the home or business. Unlike backbone cables, drop cables typically have 1 to 4 fibers, are lightweight, flexible, and designed for easy routing through buildings. The quality of the drop cable directly affects signal attenuation and overall service reliability.

Cable Types and Structure

Drop cables come in various configurations depending on deployment needs: Aerial cables: Suspended between poles, with strong outer jackets for UV, wind, and temperature resistance, sometimes reinforced with metallic strength members. Underground cables: Buried in trenches or conduits, often rodent-resistant and water-blocked for protection. Indoor/short-run cables: Lightweight, flexible, and bend-insensitive, suitable for routing through tight corners and inside buildings.

Common structures include flat figure-8 (butterfly) designs with FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) or metal reinforcements flanking the fiber, providing tensile strength, crush resistance, and easy installation. The fiber itself is usually G. 657.

A2 bend-insensitive, allowing tight bends without significant signal loss, unlike G. 652. D fibers which are less resilient indoors.

Installation Methods

Several methods are used to connect drop cables to the main network: Direct cable installation: Simple but may require excavation or aerial access and can limit future upgrades. Pre-installed duct: Offers protection and easier replacement but may restrict fiber type choices. Blown installation: Uses compressed air to push microcables through ducts, suitable for long distances and multiple short runs.

Pulling or pushing cables: Manual or mechanical methods for short distances, minimizing disruption and labor costs; preterminated connectors can eliminate splicing. Connection to the NetworkThe drop cable connects the distribution terminal to the subscriber's ONT. Proper installation ensures minimal attenuation, long-term reliability, and the ability to handle tight bends during routing.

Indoor cables are often routed through conduits or along walls, while outdoor cables may be aerially suspended or buried, depending on environmental conditions.

Key Considerations

Fiber type: Use bend-insensitive fibers (G. 657. A2) for indoor routing to prevent signal loss.

Cable protection: Reinforcements (FRP or metal) and water-blocking layers enhance durability. Length and routing: Typical FTTH drop cables range from 50 to 300 meters, depending on the distance from the distribution point. Connectorization: Preterminated connectors simplify installation and maintenance, reducing labor and potential errors.

In summary, fiber optic drop cables are the essential bridge between the main fiber network and end-users, designed for flexibility, durability, and minimal signal loss. Proper selection of cable type, fiber standard, and installation method ensures reliable high-speed broadband delivery for homes and businesses.
