Optical Module Standard 6

Optical Module Standard 6 refers to next-generation pluggable optical modules supporting PCIe 6. 0 and high-speed data center interconnects with up to 200 Gb/s per electrical lane.

Overview

Optical Module Standard 6 represents the latest evolution in pluggable optical transceivers designed for high-performance computing and AI data centers. These modules convert electrical signals from CPUs, GPUs, or other devices into optical signals for long-distance, high-bandwidth communication, supporting standards like PCIe 6. 0 and Ethernet speeds up to 1.

6 Tb/s or higher. They are engineered for hot-swapping, enabling maintenance or upgrades without powering down network equipment.

Key Features

Form Factor and Compatibility: OSFP-XD and OSFP1600 are prominent form factors under this standard. OSFP-XD doubles the number of electrical lanes compared to conventional OSFP, supporting 16 lanes at 100 Gb/s or 200 Gb/s per lane in future implementations. OSFP1600 supports 8x200 Gb/s host interfaces while maintaining backward compatibility with OSFP800 modules.

Bandwidth and Performance: Each module can deliver up to 12. 8 Tb/s (XPO module) or 1. 6 Tb/s (OSFP1600) depending on configuration.

PC

Ie 6. 0 support enables 64 GT/s per lane, significantly increasing data throughput and reducing latency between high-performance devices. Thermal Management and Power: Integrated heatsinks and liquid-cooled cold plates manage high power consumption, which can exceed 30–400 W per module in dense AI data center environments.

Optical transmission reduces the need for electrical retimers, lowering overall power consumption and improving energy efficiency. Flexibility and Deployment: Pluggable design allows for easy integration into existing systems, long-distance optical connections (hundreds of meters), and scalable deployment in 1U or 2U switch configurations. Supports multiple optical architectures, including DR, FR, LR, SR, and ZR, enabling diverse network topologies.

Applications

These modules are primarily used in: Hyperscale AI and machine learning data centers requiring ultra-high bandwidth and low latency. High-performance computing clusters connecting GPUs, CPUs, and accelerators over long distances. Next-generation Ethernet networks supporting 800G, 1.

6T, and future 3. 2T interconnects.

Summary

Optical Module Standard 6 defines a class of high-speed, pluggable optical modules that combine PCIe 6. 0 support, high-density electrical lanes, advanced thermal management, and flexible deployment options. These modules are critical for modern data centers, enabling scalable, energy-efficient, and high-bandwidth interconnects for AI, HPC, and cloud computing workloads.

An optical module is a typically hot-pluggable optical transceiver used in high-bandwidth data communications applications. Optical modules typically have an electrical interface on the side that connects to the inside of the system and an optical interface on the side that connects to the outside world through a fiber optic cable. The form factor and electrical interface are often specified by an interested group using a multi-source agreement (MSA). Optical modules can either plug into a front pa
