Structure of Distribution Box Switches

A distribution box organizes and protects electrical circuits with components like MCBs, RCDs, busbars, and earth bars, while a switch box primarily houses switches to control power flow to devices.

Distribution Box Structure

A distribution box (also called a distribution board, DB box, or consumer unit) is a low-voltage electrical enclosure that receives incoming power and distributes it safely to multiple outgoing circuits. Its main components include: Main Switch/Isolator: Controls the overall power supply to the box and allows safe maintenance.

MC

Bs (Miniature Circuit Breakers): Protect individual circuits from overloads and short circuits. RCDs/RCBOs: Provide protection against earth faults and leakage currents. Busbars: Conduct electricity to multiple circuits; typically separate phase busbars and neutral bars.

Earth Bar: Connects protective earth wires to ensure safety. Surge Protective Devices (SPD): Protect connected equipment from voltage spikes.

DI

N Rail: Mounting rail for breakers and other modular devices. The internal layout is designed to separate live, neutral, and earth conductors, ensuring safe distribution and easy maintenance. Distribution boxes can be made of metal (steel or aluminum) for durability and fire resistance or plastic (PVC or polycarbonate) for lightweight and corrosion resistance.

Installation can be open (surface-mounted) or concealed (embedded in walls) depending on aesthetics and accessibility.

Switch Box Structure

A switch box is simpler and primarily used to house switches that control the flow of electricity to lights, fans, or appliances. Its structure typically includes: Switches: Single-pole, double-pole, or multi-gang switches mounted inside the box. Wiring Terminals: Connect incoming and outgoing wires securely.

Enclosure: Usually plastic or metal, providing insulation and protection. Mounting Frame: Allows the box to be fixed to walls or panels. Unlike distribution boxes, switch boxes do not contain protective devices like MCBs or RCDs; their main function is control rather than protection.
