Cable tray right angle 90° construction

A 90-degree right-angle in a cable tray can be achieved using either pre-manufactured elbow fittings or by fabricating a bend with two 45-degree cuts and proper fastening. Fabricated 90° BendTo create a custom 90-degree bend in a straight cable tray, follow these steps: Mark the Center Line: Determine the desired bend location and draw a line across the tray base. Mark 45-Degree Cuts: Measure outward from the center line on both sides, typically 45mm–82mm depending on tray width, and mark the cuts.

Cut the Side Channels: Use an angle grinder or hacksaw to cut the tray flanges at 45 degrees, stopping at the base.

V-

Notch the Base: Remove V-shaped sections from the base to allow the sides to close together. Bend the Tray: Fold the tray at the center so the cut sides meet perfectly, forming a 90-degree angle. Secure the Joint: Drill holes through overlapping sides and fasten with bolts, nuts, and washers.

Additional bracing or connecting plates may be used for larger trays. Finish the Surface: Apply cold galvanizing spray to exposed metal to prevent rust.

Pre-

Manufactured 90° Elbow FittingsFor convenience and consistency, pre-manufactured 90-degree elbows are available: Horizontal or Vertical Elbows: These can range from -90° to +90° and are attached using screws or bolts included with the fitting. Material and Corrosion Protection: Many elbows are made from hot-dip galvanized steel, providing excellent corrosion resistance for indoor and outdoor applications. Compatibility: Ensure the elbow matches the tray system (e.g., 50mm Premier tray) and load requirements.

Design Considerations

Multiple Small Angles: For smoother bends, a 90-degree turn can be made using two 45-degree cuts or three 30-degree cuts, depending on tray width and space constraints. Support and Load: Ensure the tray and elbow are properly supported to handle cable weight and prevent sagging. Installation Environment: Outdoor installations require corrosion-resistant materials and secure fastening to withstand weather conditions.

Using either method, a 90-degree cable tray bend allows for efficient routing around obstacles while maintaining cable integrity and system reliability.
