Fiber Optic Sensing Applications in Railways

Fiber optic sensing technologies enable continuous, real-time monitoring of railway infrastructure, trains, and environmental conditions, enhancing safety, maintenance, and operational efficiency.

Key Technologies

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS): DAS converts standard optical fibers into continuous vibration sensors, detecting train movements, track conditions, and mechanical anomalies along the railway. It captures train-induced vibrations and processes them into spatially resolved acoustic features, allowing detection of rail surface defects, faulty switches, and subsurface issues such as soft soil zones.

DA

S can also monitor overhead lines, catenary flashovers, and trackside hazards, integrating seamlessly with centralized rail management systems for predictive maintenance and operational optimization. Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS): DTS continuously measures temperature variations along the fiber, enabling early detection of fires, hotspots, or overheating in tunnels, stations, and cable ducts. Railway systems can be divided into zones with specific alarm thresholds, providing rapid alerts for safety-critical events.

Distributed Temperature Strain Sensing (DTSS): DTSS measures strain along structures such as bridges, tunnels, and embankments, detecting structural health issues and potential failures. This allows operators to plan maintenance proactively and prevent service disruptions. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensors: FBG sensors are point-based optical sensors embedded in fibers that detect strain, temperature, and vibration by monitoring shifts in reflected wavelengths.

They are suitable for localized monitoring of critical components and can be multiplexed for multiple measurement points along a track or structure.

Applications in Railway Infrastructure

Track and Substructure Monitoring: Fiber optic sensors detect rail surface defects, squats, and weak subsoil layers, providing early warnings for maintenance and reducing unscheduled service disruptions. Train Tracking and Operational Monitoring: DAS enables real-time monitoring of train speed, direction, length, and load, supporting digital twin creation and improving network capacity and energy efficiency. Structural Health Monitoring: DTSS and FBG sensors monitor bridges, tunnels, and embankments for strain and deformation, ensuring safety and extending asset lifespan.

Fire and Hazard Detection: DTS identifies hotspots and potential fire risks along tracks, in stations, and in cable trays, enhancing passenger and freight safety. Integration with AI and Analytics: Advanced fiber optic sensing systems use AI for signal analysis, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance, enabling data-driven decision-making and improved reliability.
