Arrangement of the color spectrum of communication optical cables

The standard color sequence for individual fibers in optical cables follows the TIA-598-C 12-color pattern: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua. Standard 12-Color Fiber SequenceFor multi-fiber cables, each fiber is assigned a unique color to simplify identification during installation, splicing, and maintenance. The 12-color sequence is as follows: BlueOrangeGreenBrownSlateWhiteRedBlackYellowVioletRoseAqua This sequence is repeated for cables with more than 12 fibers, often with additional markings such as stripes or rings to differentiate groups of 12 fibers within high-count cables (e.g., 24, 48, 96, or 144 fibers) to maintain unique identification.

High-

Count Cable Identification

For cables exceeding 12 fibers, the Tube and Fiber system is commonly used: Each buffer tube is color-coded using the 12-color sequence. Individual fibers inside the tube also follow the same 12-color sequence. For example, in a 48-fiber cable, Fiber #34 would be the 10th fiber (Violet) in the 3rd tube (Green).

Some European or high-density ribbon cables use a 16-color sequence for MPO connectors: 13: Olive, 14: Magenta, 15: Tan, 16: Lime.

Fiber Jacket and Connector Colors

Outer jacket colors indicate fiber type and mode: single-mode (yellow), multimode OM3/OM4 (aqua), OM2 (orange), OM1 (orange or beige). Hybrid cables may include printed legends for clarity. Connector boots also follow color conventions: blue for UPC, green for APC, ensuring proper matching and minimizing reflection issues.

Practical Benefits

Using standardized color coding allows technicians to: Quickly identify fibers and avoid misconnection. Reduce installation and maintenance time by up to 60–80%. Ensure consistent identification across manufacturers and network environments.

Understanding and following these color sequences is essential for accurate fiber management in data centers, FTTH deployments, and enterprise networks.
