Working principle of optocouplers

Optocouplers transfer electrical signals between isolated circuits using light, providing electrical isolation and protection from voltage spikes and noise.

Working Principle

An optocoupler, also called an opto-isolator, consists of two main components: a light-emitting diode (LED) on the input side and a photodetector (such as a phototransistor) on the output side. When an electrical signal is applied to the LED, it emits light, typically infrared, proportional to the input signal. This light travels across an optically transparent barrier inside the device and strikes the photodetector.

The photodetector responds to the light by allowing current to flow in the output circuit, effectively reproducing the input signal without any direct electrical connection.

When the LE

D is off, the photodetector remains non-conductive, preventing current flow, similar to an open switch.

Function

The primary function of an optocoupler is electrical isolation. By using light to transfer signals, it separates high-voltage or noisy circuits from low-voltage or sensitive circuits, protecting components such as microcontrollers from voltage spikes, electrical noise, or grounding issues. Optocouplers are widely used in: Power supply circuits to safely transfer signals between high-voltage and low-voltage sections.

Microcontroller interfaces to prevent damage from voltage surges. Sensor circuits to avoid noise interference from processing circuits. Control systems and communication equipment where clean signal transfer is critical.

Types

Optocouplers are classified based on their output device: Phototransistor optocouplers: Most common, where the phototransistor switches on/off based on LED light. Photodiode, phototriac, and logic output optocouplers: Used for faster response, AC control, or digital logic applications.

Summary

In essence, an optocoupler converts an electrical signal into light and back into an electrical signal, maintaining complete electrical isolation between input and output. This ensures safe signal transmission, protects sensitive electronics, and reduces interference in both analog and digital circuits.
