Connecting vertical and horizontal cable trays

Vertical and horizontal cable trays are connected using vertical bends (risers), splice plates, and clamps to ensure secure, aligned, and code-compliant transitions.

Key Components for Connection

Vertical Bends (Risers): These are specialized fittings that allow the cable tray to change elevation from a horizontal run to a vertical section. They are available in standard angles (e.g., 90°) and are designed to maintain proper cable support and bend radius. Splice Plates: Splice plates are used to join the ends of two tray sections securely.

They are bolted to the side rails of both the horizontal and vertical trays to provide mechanical strength and alignment. Clamps and Hangers: Ladder tray clamps (SC or DC types) are positioned around the side rails of the tray. For vertical connections, threaded rods with washers and hex nuts are used to lift and secure the tray sections in place.

Double clamps can support adjacent trays when needed.

Installation Procedure

Align the Trays: Position the vertical riser directly above the horizontal tray, ensuring the side rails are aligned for proper load transfer and cable support. Attach Splice Plates: Bolt splice plates to the side rails of both the horizontal and vertical sections. This ensures a rigid connection and prevents misalignment during cable installation.

Secure with Clamps: Place clamps around the side rails and thread the hanger rods through the clamp holes. Use washers and hex nuts to adjust the height and secure the trays firmly. Check Cable Bend Radius: Ensure that the transition maintains the minimum bend radius for the cables to prevent damage and maintain performance.

Additional Considerations

Support Spacing: Maintain proper support spacing for both horizontal and vertical sections to prevent sagging or excessive stress on the cables. Material Compatibility: Ensure that the clamps, splice plates, and trays are made of compatible materials (e.g., steel, aluminum, or stainless steel) to prevent corrosion and maintain structural integrity. Code Compliance: Follow NEC Article 392 and manufacturer guidelines for bonding, grounding, and installation practices.

By using vertical bends, splice plates, and properly installed clamps, the connection between vertical and horizontal cable trays can be made secure, aligned, and safe for long-term cable management.
