Multi-core multimode fiber optic cable processing

Multi-core multimode fiber optic cables combine multiple cores and multiple propagation modes to significantly increase data capacity, requiring precise fabrication, core coupling management, and crosstalk reduction.

Overview of Multi-

Core Multimode FibersMulti-core fibers (MCFs) embed multiple light-guiding cores within a single cladding, allowing each core to act as an independent waveguide for parallel data transmission, which is the basis for space-division multiplexing (SDM). In multimode fibers (MMFs), each core supports multiple propagation modes, enabling even higher data throughput per core. Combining these two concepts—multi-core and multimode—creates multi-core multimode fibers (MCMMFs), which can carry multiple signals simultaneously across several cores and modes.

Fabrication and Processing Techniques

Preform Design: MCMMFs are typically fabricated from all-glass preforms containing multiple cores arranged in a ring, hexagonal lattice, or 2D grid. Alternatively, photonic crystal fibers can be used, where air holes define multiple cores without requiring complex preform extensions. Fiber Drawing: The preform is heated and drawn into a fiber while maintaining precise core spacing to minimize crosstalk between cores and modes.

For multimode operation, the core diameter and refractive index profile are carefully controlled to support the desired number of modes. Coupling and Mode Management: In MCMMFs, mode coupling can occur if cores are closely spaced, causing light to transfer between cores or modes. Advanced designs, such as coupled-type MCFs, intentionally reduce core spacing to enable controlled optical coupling, which can improve spatial multiplexing efficiency.

Crosstalk Reduction: Crosstalk between cores and modes is a critical challenge. Techniques include optimizing core spacing, using graded-index profiles, and employing supermode analysis to predict stable field configurations that minimize interference. ApplicationsMCMMFs are used in high-capacity optical communications, subsea and terrestrial networks, sensing, and industrial laser applications.

Recent research demonstrates the ability to combine optical signals of different modes across multiple cores, achieving up to 10 times higher capacity than conventional fibers while maintaining the same outer diameter. This makes MCMMFs a key technology for next-generation networks aiming for ultra-high bandwidth and spatial multiplexing.

Challenges and Future Directions

Fabrication Complexity: Producing high-quality cores with precise alignment remains challenging. Propagation Delay Management: Differences in mode propagation delays can degrade transmission, requiring careful design. Integration with Existing Systems: Coupling MCMMFs with standard single-core fibers or devices requires specialized connectors and multiplexers.

Ongoing research focuses on fusing multimode and coupled multi-core designs to further increase optical multiplicity while maintaining manageable fiber diameters, enabling next-generation high-capacity optical networks.
