Wiring of the main switch in the distribution box

Connect the incoming phase and neutral wires to the main MCB, then route the output to the RCCB and downstream MCBs, ensuring proper neutral and earth connections.

Step-by-

Step Wiring Instructions1.

Identify Components and Input/

Output Sides

The main switch is usually a double-pole MCB with the highest current rating (commonly 63A for domestic installations) and serves as the primary disconnect for the distribution box. Downstream protective devices include RCCBs (for leakage and shock protection) and single-pole or double-pole MCBs for individual circuits. Identify the input terminals (from the power supply) and output terminals (to downstream devices) on each device.

2.

Connect Incoming Power

Connect the phase (live) and neutral wires from the incoming supply to the input terminals of the main MCB. Ensure the main MCB is rated appropriately for the total load and complies with local voltage standards (e.g., 230V single-phase in India/UK/EU or 120/240V in the US),. 3.

Connect Main MCB to RCCB

Connect the output terminals of the main MCB to the input terminals of the RCCB.

The RCC

B should have a current rating equal to or slightly higher than the main MCB (commonly 30mA for domestic installations) to provide protection against leakage currents. 4.

Connect RCC

B to Downstream MCBsFor single-pole MCBs, connect only the phase wire from the RCCB output to the MCB input, and connect the neutral wire to the neutral link. For double-pole MCBs, connect both phase and neutral wires from the RCCB output to the MCB input. The neutral link distributes neutral to all single-pole MCBs, and the earth link connects all protective earth wires.

5.

Connect Loads

For double-pole MCB loads, connect both phase and neutral from the MCB output to the load, and connect the earth wire to the earth link. For single-pole MCB loads, connect the phase from the MCB output to the load, and connect neutral and earth to the respective links. 6.

Grounding

Connect the earth wire from the supply or earth pit to the earth link in the distribution box. Ensure all metallic enclosures and devices are properly grounded according to local electrical codes. 7.

Safety Precautions

Always switch off the main supply before wiring. Verify all connections are tight and insulated. Use appropriate wire gauges for the load and MCB rating.

Follow local electrical codes and standards (IEC, NEC, or regional regulations) for safe installation. By following these steps, the main switch will safely control power to the distribution box, and downstream protective devices will ensure proper circuit protection and grounding.
