Fiber Array Scanning Principle and Price

Fiber arrays transmit and receive light through precisely aligned optical fibers, enabling area scanning and high-fidelity signal detection, with prices varying based on configuration and fiber type.

Principle of Fiber Array Scanning

A fiber array is a structured assembly of multiple optical fibers arranged in a precise geometric pattern, often in one- or two-dimensional arrays, to ensure minimal signal loss and high positional accuracy. The scanning principle involves: Light Transmission and Collection: Light from a source or reflected from a target is coupled into the fibers. Each fiber guides light via total internal reflection, maintaining signal integrity.

Area Scanning: In imaging lidar or sensor systems, a spatial light modulator or scanning device at the front end selectively illuminates small regions of the fiber array. Only one area receives light at a time, and the corresponding fibers transmit the signal to dedicated photodetectors. Signal Detection: Each fiber or fiber bundle is connected to a photodetector.

By sequentially scanning the array, the system reconstructs a high-resolution image or collects precise sensor data. Design Considerations: Precision alignment, optimal fiber spacing, and suitable materials (e.g., silica, polyimide coatings) are critical to prevent crosstalk and maximize coupling efficiency. Multi-mode fibers with larger numerical apertures are often used to improve received power in lidar applications.

Applications include imaging systems, lidar, telecommunications, laser power combining, and sensor arrays.

Price of Fiber Arrays

The cost of fiber arrays depends on factors such as: Fiber type: Single-mode, multi-mode, or polarization-maintaining fibers. Array configuration: 1D or 2D arrays, number of fibers, and spacing. Additional features: Spot-size converters, microlenses for collimation, or free-space coupling enhancements.

Precision and fabrication: High-precision v-groove arrays or 3D microfabricated arrays increase cost. Commercially, basic v-groove fiber arrays can start from a few hundred dollars for small arrays, while custom high-precision arrays with microlenses or PIC-compatible features can range from $1,000 to several thousand dollars per unit, depending on specifications and volume. Vendors often offer discounts for bulk orders and provide worldwide shipping.

Summary

Fiber arrays enable high-precision light transmission and scanning by guiding light through aligned fibers and sequentially detecting signals across the array. Their price varies widely based on fiber type, array size, and additional optical enhancements, making them suitable for applications from industrial imaging to advanced lidar systems. High-precision arrays with specialized features are more expensive but essential for photonic integrated circuits and high-fidelity sensing.
