Straight-through cold splice for electrical wires

A straight-through cold splice connects two electrical wires without heat, using pre-stretched insulating sleeves that shrink to form a secure, moisture-resistant joint. What is a Cold Splice? A cold splice is a method of joining electrical wires or cables without applying heat.

Instead of soldering or using a heat gun, cold splices rely on pre-stretched insulating materials such as silicone or polyurethane that shrink around the conductors when a removable core is unwound. This creates a tight, sealed connection that protects against moisture, dust, and environmental contaminants.

Straight-

Through Application

A straight-through cold splice is used to connect two wires or cables in a linear configuration, maintaining electrical continuity without branching. These splices are commonly used in low and medium voltage networks, including underground, outdoor, and industrial installations. They are suitable for cables with PVC, XLPE, PE, or EPR insulation, and can accommodate both single-core and multi-core cables.

Components and Installation

Typical straight-through cold splice kits include: Mechanical or compression connectors to join the conductors securely. Pre-stretched cold shrink sleeves that provide insulation and environmental protection. Removable core that, when unwound, allows the sleeve to shrink and seal the joint.

Installation steps generally involve: Stripping the cable ends to expose the conductors. Inserting the conductors into the mechanical connector and tightening. Sliding the cold shrink sleeve over the joint.

Removing the inner core to allow the sleeve to shrink and form a tight seal.

Advantages

No heat required, eliminating fire hazards and the need for hot-work permits. Quick and easy installation, reducing labor and downtime. Reliable insulation and sealing, suitable for harsh environments and underground applications.

Versatile, compatible with various cable types and voltage classes. ApplicationsStraight-through cold splices are widely used for: Extending cable runs in power distribution networks. Repairing damaged cables in industrial or outdoor settings.

Connecting telecom, data, or signaling cables where moisture resistance is critical. By using a cold splice, electricians can achieve a durable, safe, and efficient connection without the complexity and risks associated with heat-based splicing methods.
