What type of pigtail should be used for green fiber optic flanges

Use a single-mode fiber pigtail with an APC (Angled Physical Contact) connector for green fiber optic flanges.

Connector Type and Polish

Green fiber optic flanges are standardized to indicate APC connectors, which feature an 8-degree angled end-face to minimize back reflection and improve signal quality. Therefore, the pigtail must have a matching APC connector on the factory-terminated end. Never mix APC (green) with UPC (blue) ports, as this can cause high insertion loss and network issues.

Fiber Type

For green APC connectors, the pigtail should be single-mode fiber, typically OS2, which is suitable for long-distance transmission and low attenuation. Multimode fibers (OM1–OM5) are not compatible with APC flanges and are generally used with blue or beige connectors. Pigtail ConfigurationSingle-fiber pigtails are standard for most ODF and terminal box applications.

Multi-fiber pigtails are used in high-density panels but must also match the APC connector type if green flanges are present. The bare fiber end is designed for fusion splicing to the incoming fiber, ensuring a permanent, low-loss connection.

Additional Considerations

Cable length: Typically 1–3 meters, depending on installation needs. Jacket type: Indoor pigtails are sufficient for protected environments, while armored or waterproof pigtails are recommended for outdoor or high-traffic areas. Color coding: Green connectors indicate APC; ensure consistent color coding across the installation to avoid confusion.

By selecting a single-mode APC pigtail with proper fiber type and polish, you ensure low insertion loss, high return loss, and reliable connectivity for green fiber optic flanges.
