Sx and lx optical modules

SX modules are designed for short-range multimode fiber connections, while LX modules are intended for long-range single-mode fiber links.

SX SF

P Modules (Short Wavelength)SX stands for Short Wavelength, typically operating at 850nm using VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) technology. These modules are optimized for short distances, usually up to 550 meters, and are strictly compatible with multimode fiber (MMF), including OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4 types.

S

X modules are ideal for intra-building connections, such as linking switches within the same server room or data center. They are cost-effective, consume less power, and are widely used in enterprise LANs and industrial networks.

Cable Recommendations for S

X: OM1/OM2 (orange): Limited distance (220–275m)OM3/OM4 (aqua): Full 550m rangeOM5 (lime green): Compatible but generally unnecessary for 1G LX SFP Modules (Long Wavelength)LX stands for Long Wavelength, operating at 1310nm and typically using Fabry-Perot (FP) or Distributed Feedback (DFB) lasers.

L

X modules are designed for long-distance transmission, supporting ranges from 10 km up to 20 km over single-mode fiber (SMF). They are suitable for inter-building or campus-wide connections, metropolitan area networks, and large enterprise networks where fiber links span significant distances.

L

X modules can also work over multimode fiber with mode-conditioning patch cables (MCP), but their primary design is for single-mode fiber.

It is cheaper and energy-efficient.

Use L

X if your link exceeds 500 meters or requires single-mode fiber for long-distance connectivity. Selecting the correct module ensures network reliability, optimal performance, and cost efficiency. Always verify fiber type, distance, and connector compatibility before installation to avoid link failures.
