Switch Stacking Optical Modules

Switch stacking can use DAC cables for short distances, AOC cables for medium distances, and optical modules with fiber jumpers for long distances. Types of Modules and CablesDAC (Direct Attach Copper) CablesFixed-length copper cables with modules at both ends. Transmit electrical signals, not optical signals.

Cost-effective and low power consumption. Ideal for short-distance stacking under 7 meters, typically within a single rack.

AO

C (Active Optical Cables)Fixed-length optical cables with integrated modules at both ends. Provide photoelectric conversion for optical transmission. Suitable for medium distances between 7–30 meters.

More cost-effective than using two separate optical modules with a fiber jumper for the same distance. Replacement is all-or-nothing if one module fails, unlike separate optical modules. Optical Modules + Fiber JumpersSeparate SFP/QSFP optical modules connected via fiber optic patch cords.

Provide high insulation, long-distance transmission, and flexibility in module replacement. Recommended for distances over 30 meters or when stacking switches across multiple racks or rooms.

Practical Considerations

Distance: Choose DAC for 30m. Cost: DAC is the cheapest, AOC slightly more expensive, and optical modules + fiber the most flexible but costlier. Maintenance: Optical modules allow individual replacement, whereas AOC requires replacing the entire cable if one module fails.

Network Reliability: Optical modules with fiber jumpers provide the highest reliability and isolation from electromagnetic interference. By selecting the appropriate module type based on distance, cost, and maintenance needs, network administrators can ensure efficient and reliable switch stacking.
