Connecting sloping cable trays to horizontal cable trays

Use angled splice plates or adjustable fittings to securely join horizontal and sloped cable trays while maintaining proper support and cable bending radius.

Step-by-

Step Connection Process1.

Plan the Transition

Determine the slope angle and the horizontal run length. Use a cable tray offset calculator if needed to estimate the sloped section length and horizontal footprint. Ensure the chosen angle allows for smooth cable pulling and respects the minimum bending radius of the cables.

2.

Select the Appropriate Fittings

For angled connections, use L-shaped, T-shaped, or cross-shaped splice plates to join trays at non-linear angles. Flexible horizontal adjustable splice plates can accommodate custom angles and are ideal when standard fittings do not match the slope. Ensure the fittings are compatible with the tray type (ladder, solid-bottom, or ventilated).

3.

Prepare the Cable Trays

Mark the cutting line on the tray where the slope begins. Field cut the tray if necessary, removing any rungs that interfere with the connection. Align the ends of the horizontal and sloped trays to ensure a flush fit.

4.

Install the Splice Plates

Position the splice plates on both sides of the joint. Use bolts, nuts, and washers to secure the plates. Tighten to the manufacturer's recommended torque to ensure stability.

For adjustable splice plates, set the desired angle before tightening. 5.

Support and Secure the Trays

Install supports within 24 inches (600 mm) on both sides of the joint for adjustable splice plates. Ensure the sloped section is adequately supported along its length to prevent sagging and maintain system stability. 6.

Verify Alignment and Safety

Check that the trays are level horizontally and follow the intended slope. Confirm that the cable bending radius is not exceeded and that cables can be pulled smoothly. Inspect all bolts and fittings for tightness and proper grounding if required.

7.

Final Touches

Add covers if needed to protect cables from dust or debris. Ensure the installation complies with local electrical codes and standards. By following these steps, you can safely and efficiently connect a horizontal cable tray to a sloping tray, maintaining structural integrity, cable protection, and ease of future maintenance.
