Aerial Optical Cable Laying Project

Aerial optical cable installation involves careful planning, safety measures, and specific methods such as moving reel, stationary reel, and cable lashing to ensure secure and efficient deployment above ground.

Overview

Aerial optical cables are suspended between utility poles or pylons and can be self-supporting (ADSS), figure-8 with a catenary wire, or lashed to existing overhead strands. This method is often faster and more cost-effective than underground installation, especially in uneven or rocky terrain. Proper planning, route surveying, and obtaining permits are essential before installation begins.

Safety Precautions

Personnel must be trained and equipped with safety boots, gloves, hard hats, and harnesses. Maintain 3-point contact when climbing ladders or poles. Avoid stepping on cables or exposed fibers, and be cautious of laser light exposure from active fibers.

Follow OSH

A regulations and company-specific safety protocols.

Preparation

Inspect cable reels for damage and ensure protective coverings remain in place. Gather necessary tools, materials, and machinery, including cable blocks, lashers, and tensioning equipment. Identify cable loops, splice locations, and micro-duct paths if applicable.

Installation Methods1.

Moving Reel Method

Used when vehicles can drive most of the cable route. The cable is raised and lashed to the strand in one operation, minimizing handling. 2.

Stationary Reel Method

Applied when vehicles cannot access the full route. The cable is pulled beneath the strand using cable blocks, then lashed starting from the far end toward the stationary reel. 3.

Cable Lashing

Involves securing the cable to a messenger strand using a lasher. Ensure minimum bend radius is maintained and avoid excessive pulling or crushing forces to prevent signal degradation. Cable Types and ConsiderationsFigure-8 cables: Include an independent catenary wire for support.

ADS

S cables: All-dielectric, self-supporting, suitable near power lines. Micro-duct cables: Can be installed using jetting methods for smaller conduits. Post-InstallationVerify cable tension, sag, and alignment.

Install dead-ends and splice closures as required. Document the installation, including cable routes, splice points, and environmental measures. By following these procedures, aerial optical cables can be installed safely and efficiently, ensuring long-term performance and minimal signal loss.
