Fiber Optic SOC Connector

A Splice-On Connector (SOC) is a field-installable fiber optic connector that uses fusion splicing to provide high-performance, low-loss connections without the need for mechanical splicing.

Overview

A Splice-

On Connector (SOC) is designed to terminate optical fibers by directly fusing the fiber to a pre-polished connector stub, creating a permanent, low-loss connection. Unlike mechanical splice connectors, SOCs eliminate the need for glue or post-assembly polishing, offering factory-level optical performance in the field. They are widely used in data centers, enterprise networks, FTTx deployments, and telecom applications where high reliability and minimal insertion loss are critical.

Key Features

Fusion Splice Termination: SOCs use fusion splicing to join the fiber to the connector stub, ensuring superior optical performance compared to mechanical splices.

Pre-

Polished, ACA-Aligned Ferrules: Many SOCs, such as Diamond's Fusion Crocodile, feature Active Core Alignment (ACA) ferrules for precise core alignment, low insertion loss, and excellent return loss.

Field-

Installable: SOCs can be installed on-site using standard fusion splicers, eliminating the need for specialized polishing equipment. Compact and Durable: SOCs often include integrated splice protection and strain relief boots, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. Connector Types: Available in SC, LC, FC, ST, E-2000, and F-3000 formats, compatible with single-mode and multimode fibers.

Advantages

Reduced Insertion Loss: Direct fiber-to-fiber fusion minimizes optical loss at the splice point. Enhanced Reliability: Permanent fusion connections are less susceptible to environmental disturbances such as temperature changes or physical stress. Time and Cost Efficiency: SOCs allow rapid installation in high-density environments like data centers, where the speed of making connections is a significant cost factor.

No Splice Trays Required: Many SOC designs eliminate the need for additional splice trays or cabinets, simplifying network deployment.

Installation Process

Fiber Preparation: Strip, clean, and cleave the fiber to the proper length. Connector Placement: Insert the fiber into the SOC holder, which positions it for precise cleaving and splicing. Fusion Splicing: Use a compatible fusion splicer to join the fiber to the pre-polished connector stub.

Protection and Booting: Apply the integrated splice protection sleeve and strain relief boot to secure the connection.

Applications

Data Centers: High-density single-mode fiber connections where speed and performance are critical.

FT

Tx Networks: Drop-cable terminations in fiber-to-the-home or fiber-to-the-building deployments. Enterprise and Telecom Networks: Reliable, low-loss connections in both indoor and outdoor environments. In summary, SOC connectors provide a high-performance, field-installable solution for fiber optic networks, combining the reliability of fusion splicing with the convenience of on-site installation, making them ideal for modern high-speed and high-density network environments.
