How to use optical fiber optic cable pulling

Fiber optic cables should always be pulled using the internal strength members, following proper tension, bend radius, and pathway planning to prevent damage and maintain signal integrity.

Key Principles for Pulling Fiber Optic Cables

Use the Strength Member: Fiber optic cables contain internal kevlar or aramid yarns, known as strength members, which bear the pulling load. Never pull by the outer jacket, as it can stretch, tear, or compromise the fiber inside. Expose a small portion of the strength member using a cable stripper, loop it through a pulling eye, and secure it with tape or a knot for safe pulling.

Maintain Proper Bend Radius: Modern bend-insensitive fibers can tolerate tighter bends (as low as 4. 4mm), but older fibers require larger minimum bend radii (30mm or more). Exceeding the bend radius can break the fiber or degrade signal performance.

Plan the Pathway: Before pulling, inspect the conduit, duct, or cable tray for obstacles. Ensure the route is clear, smooth, and free of sharp edges. For long or complex runs, calculate the estimated pulling tension and compare it to the cable's rated pull strength, which can range from 50 lbs for indoor cables to 600 lbs for ruggedized outdoor cables.

Use Lubrication and Mechanical Aids: For long duct pulls, apply fiber-specific lubricants to reduce friction. Mechanical aids like pulleys, cable rollers, or air-blowing systems can help prevent twisting, crushing, or excessive tension during installation.

Handling Pre-

Terminated Cables: When pulling pre-terminated cables, use a pulling sleeve or mesh around the connectors rather than attaching directly to the connector, which could disconnect during the pull. Secure the sleeve according to manufacturer guidelines. Cleanliness and Safety: Keep dust caps on connectors until final termination to prevent contamination.

Wear safety glasses to protect against glass fiber shards, and avoid crushing or kinking the cable.

Step-by-

Step Pulling Procedure

Inspect and Prepare the Cable: Check the cable for defects, remove a small portion of the jacket to expose the strength member, and attach a pulling eye or grip. Plan the Route: Confirm the pathway is clear, smooth, and within bend radius limits. Apply Lubricant (if needed): For long or tight duct runs, apply a fiber-safe lubricant.

Pull the Cable: Use manual or mechanical pulling methods, keeping tension within the cable's rated limits. Monitor the Pull: Watch for twists, snags, or excessive tension. Use smart monitoring devices if available.

Terminate and Test: Once installed, remove dust caps, terminate connectors, and test for signal integrity. By following these best practices, fiber optic cables can be installed safely, minimizing the risk of damage and ensuring long-term network performance.
