Configure the fiber optic serial port of the switch

To configure a fiber optic switch via the serial port, connect the console port to a PC using the appropriate cable and terminal emulation software, then set communication parameters such as baud rate, data bits, parity, and stop bits.

Connecting the Serial Console

Identify the console port on your fiber optic switch.

For Cisco MD

S 9148T, this is an RS-232 console port located on the front panel. Use the correct cable: Typically, a rollover RJ-45-to-RJ-45 cable is supplied. If your PC has a DB-25 serial port, use an RJ-45-to-DB-25 adapter.

Connect to a PC: Attach the adapter to your PC's serial port and connect the other end to the switch console port.

Ensure the P

C supports VT100 terminal emulation.

Terminal Emulation Setup

Use terminal software such as PuTTY, HyperTerminal, or Tera Term. Configure the serial connection with standard parameters: Baud rate: 9600 bps (common default)Data bits: 8Parity: NoneStop bits: 1Flow control: NoneLaunch the terminal session to access the switch CLI for configuration.

Configuring the Switch

Log in to the switch CLI using the terminal session. Set basic switch parameters: HostnameEnable passwordUser passwordIP address for management (if applicable)Configure fiber-optic ports: Ensure the ports are fiber-enabled. Set speed and duplex mode according to network requirements.

Assign ports to the appropriate VLAN if needed. Save configuration: Use the command copy running-config startup-config to store settings in flash memory. Additional ConsiderationsSFP/SFP+ transceivers must match at both ends of the fiber link, and cables should not exceed recommended lengths.

Electrostatic precautions: Wear an ESD wrist strap when handling transceivers and keep connectors clean. Serial device servers like ZLAN9153 can convert RS-232/RS-485 signals to fiber, allowing remote access without modifying host software. Troubleshooting: If the fiber link does not come up, verify transceiver compatibility, port configuration, and cable integrity.

By following these steps, you can establish a reliable serial connection to your fiber optic switch, configure its ports, and integrate it into your network or SAN environment.
