The fiber optic cable was torn

A torn fiber optic cable can be repaired by locating the break, cutting out damaged sections, preparing the fiber ends, splicing them, and testing the connection to ensure low-loss performance.

Assess the Damage

First, perform a visual inspection to identify visible cuts, kinks, or damaged jackets. Look for flattened areas, sharp bends, or connector contamination, as these can affect signal quality even if the fiber is not fully severed. For internal or less visible faults, use an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) to pinpoint the exact location of the break and measure signal loss.

Prepare the Cable

Cut away the damaged section using a fiber optic cutter to prevent further damage. Strip the protective coating and Kevlar strength members carefully to expose the bare fiber without scratching or nicking it. Clean the fiber ends thoroughly to remove dust, oil, or fingerprints, which can block light transmission.

Splicing the Fiber

Fusion splicing is preferred for long-term, low-loss connections. Align the fiber ends precisely and fuse them using a splicer. Mechanical splicing can be used for temporary or quick repairs, inserting the fibers into a connector that holds them in alignment.

After splicing, protect the joint with a heat-shrink sleeve or protective casing to prevent environmental damage.

Testing the Repair

Once the splice is complete, test the repaired fiber using an OTDR or a Visual Fault Locator (VFL) to ensure proper light transmission and minimal signal loss. Replace the cable if insertion loss exceeds 3 dB or if multiple breaks occur.

Preventive Measures

Maintain the correct bend radius and avoid excessive pulling or tension during installation. Use armored or waterproof cables for outdoor routes to prevent rodent damage and moisture ingress. Keep connectors sealed and clean to reduce reflection loss and signal degradation.

If you are unsure about performing the repair yourself, especially for main internet lines or complex installations, it is advisable to contact a professional technician to ensure network stability and long-term reliability.
