Transmission distance of optical fiber cables

Single-mode fiber can transmit over 160–200 km without amplification, while multimode fiber is limited to a few kilometers depending on speed and type.

Single-

Mode Fiber (SMF)Single-mode fiber uses a single light path, which minimizes modal dispersion and allows for long-distance transmission. Typical maximum distances without amplification are around 160 kilometers, but with dispersion-compensating fibers, distances can exceed 200 kilometers. Using optical amplifiers, such as Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), single-mode fiber can extend to hundreds or even thousands of kilometers, as seen in submarine and long-haul networks.

The optimal wavelengths for long-distance SMF are 1310 nm for medium-range and 1550 nm for high-efficiency, long-range transmission due to lower attenuation. Multimode Fiber (MMF)Multimode fiber has a larger core and supports multiple light paths, which leads to modal dispersion and limits its effective distance. Maximum distances vary by fiber type and data rate: OM1: ~275 meters at 1 Gbps, ~33 meters at 10 GbpsOM2: ~550 meters at 1 Gbps, ~82 meters at 10 GbpsOM3: up to 300 meters at 10 GbpsOM4: up to 420 meters at 10 Gbps Overall, multimode fiber rarely exceeds 2 kilometers, even at lower speeds.

Factors Affecting Transmission Distance

Attenuation: Signal loss due to scattering, absorption, and impurities in the fiber; measured in dB/km. Lower attenuation fibers allow longer distances. Dispersion: Spreading of light pulses over time, including chromatic, modal, and polarization mode dispersion, which limits distance and bandwidth.

Wavelength: Longer wavelengths (e.g., 1550 nm) experience lower attenuation and are preferred for long-distance SMF. Amplification and Regeneration: Optical amplifiers or repeaters can boost signals, extending the reach of single-mode fiber to intercity or international distances. Connectors and Splices: Each connection introduces loss; high-quality, low-loss components help maintain long-distance performance.

Practical SummaryShort-range LANs: Multimode fiber is sufficient (up to 2 km). Campus or metropolitan networks: Single-mode fiber without amplification can cover 40–160 km. Long-haul or submarine networks: Single-mode fiber with amplifiers can span hundreds to thousands of kilometers.

Choosing the right fiber type depends on distance requirements, data rate, budget, and network design. Single-mode fiber is ideal for long-distance, high-speed applications, while multimode fiber is cost-effective for shorter, lower-speed links.
