Fire safety requirements for cable trays

Cable trays must be installed and fire-protected according to strict firestopping, material, and installation standards to prevent fire propagation and maintain circuit integrity.

Firestopping Requirements

Cable trays passing through walls, floors, or slabs must have all openings tightly sealed with firestopping materials to prevent fire and smoke spread. Key requirements include: Materials: Use fire-rated boards, firestop packs, firestop mastic, or fire-resistant mineral wool. Installation: Gaps between firestop packs and cables should not exceed 1 cm², and packing thickness should be at least 24 cm.

Large Openings: Install a fire-resistant backing plate before sealing. Cover plates should be square, evenly painted, and properly dimensioned. Slab Penetrations: Provide 20–30 mm of firestopping and a fire-support plate at the top; waterstops of at least 50 mm are recommended at floor-level penetrations.

Cable Tray Installation Standards

Tray Material: Indoor trays typically use painted steel or galvanized steel; outdoor or corrosive environments require hot-dip galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum alloy, or fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Layout: Routes should be short, straight, and coordinated with building structures. Power and signal cables must be segregated to reduce interference.

Mechanical Support: Cables must be supported properly; non-metallic clips or ties cannot be the sole support on exposed surfaces.

Fire Ratings and Protective Coatings

Circuit Integrity: Cable trays may require fire ratings such as E90, maintaining circuit integrity for up to 90 minutes under fire conditions. Protective Products: Fire-resistant coatings and tapes, such as FLAMMOTECT-A and DG-CR 0. 7, provide a protective shield against fire, UV, moisture, and chemicals, ensuring cables remain functional during a fire.

Applications: These solutions are suitable for high-risk environments including hospitals, power plants, industrial facilities, and offshore installations.

Compliance and Best Practices

Ensure all firestopping and protective measures comply with local building codes and electrical safety standards. Maintain clear documentation of firestopping materials, installation methods, and fire ratings for inspection and maintenance purposes. Regularly inspect and maintain cable trays and firestopping systems to ensure ongoing compliance and safety.

By following these regulations and guidelines, cable tray installations can achieve effective fire protection, maintain electrical system integrity, and comply with safety standards in both industrial and commercial environments.
