Assembly process diagram of the spectrometer

A spectrometer is assembled by aligning the light source, entrance slit, monochromator (grating or prism), sample holder, and detector in a precise optical path to measure light across wavelengths.

Key Components and Their Assembly

Light Source: Provides the initial beam of light, which can be a tungsten lamp, deuterium lamp, or laser depending on the wavelength range required. The light is directed toward the entrance slit. Entrance Slit: Controls the amount of light entering the spectrometer.

Its width affects both resolution and intensity. The slit ensures a narrow, well-defined beam for accurate spectral analysis. Monochromator / Diffraction Grating: Disperses light into its component wavelengths.

In a typical lens-grating-lens (LGL) setup, the light passes through a collimating lens, hits a diffraction grating, and is focused by an imaging lens onto the detector. The grating can be configured in Czerny-Turner or Littrow geometries depending on the design. Sample Holder / Cuvette: Positioned in the optical path, the sample interacts with the monochromatic light.

In Raman spectrometers, for example, the laser light is focused into the sample, and scattered light is collected for analysis. Mirrors and Dichroic Beamsplitters: Used to steer and separate light paths. Dichroic mirrors reflect specific wavelengths while transmitting others, allowing selective measurement of scattered or emitted light.

Filters: Edge-pass or band-pass filters remove unwanted light, such as residual laser light, ensuring only the relevant spectral components reach the detector. Detector: Captures the dispersed light and converts it into an electrical signal. Detectors can be CCD arrays or photodiodes, depending on the spectrometer type.

Output System: Processes and displays the measured spectrum, either as a graph or numerical data for analysis.

Assembly Flow

Align the light source with the entrance slit. Direct the light through the monochromator (lens-grating-lens or prism system). Position the sample holder in the path of the monochromatic light.

Use mirrors and dichroic beamsplitters to guide scattered or emitted light toward the detector. Insert filters as needed to remove unwanted wavelengths. Connect the detector to the output system for data acquisition.

This assembly ensures that light travels in a controlled path, interacts with the sample, and is accurately measured, providing high-resolution spectral data. Proper alignment and calibration are critical for optimal performance.
