Where to connect the pigtail

To connect a pigtail, twist a short wire to the circuit wires using a wire nut, then attach the free end to the device's terminal.

Tools and Materials Needed

Wire strippersNeedle-nose or lineman's pliersScrewdriverWire nuts rated for the wire gaugePigtail wire of the same gauge and color as the circuit wiresNon-contact voltage tester for safetyStep-by-Step GuideTurn Off Power Shut off the circuit at the breaker panel and confirm the wires are de-energized using a non-contact voltage tester to ensure safety. Prepare the Pigtail Wire Cut a short wire (6–8 inches) of the same gauge and color as the circuit wire. Strip about 3/4 inch of insulation from both ends.

Strip Circuit Wires Strip the ends of the existing circuit wires that will connect to the pigtail, exposing the same length of bare copper as the pigtail. Twist Wires Together Align the stripped ends of the circuit wires and the pigtail wire. Twist them together clockwise using your fingers or pliers, then secure with a properly sized wire nut.

Ensure all exposed copper is covered and the connection is tight. Attach Pigtail to Device Loop the free end of the pigtail wire around the device's screw terminal in a clockwise direction and tighten the screw. Match wire colors: black/red to hot, white to neutral, and green/bare to ground.

Check Connection Gently tug each wire to confirm the splice is secure. Ensure the device is properly grounded and that the pigtail provides continuity for downstream devices. Restore Power and Test Turn the breaker back on and test the device to confirm proper operation.

Safety Tips

Always use wires of the same gauge and type as the existing circuit. Never work on live wires. Use insulated tools and wear safety glasses.

Follow the National Electrical Code for minimum pigtail length (6 inches) and grounding requirements. This method ensures a reliable, safe, and code-compliant connection that maintains circuit continuity even if the device is removed or replaced.
