How to route cables after the cable tray is installed

Proper cable routing after tray installation ensures safe, organized, and code-compliant electrical distribution while protecting cable integrity.

Planning and Preparation

Before routing cables, review the tray layout and identify the types and quantities of cables to be installed. Consider future expansion to avoid overcrowding and ensure proper spacing for heat dissipation and maintenance access. Segregate cables by voltage, function, or signal type to minimize interference and comply with NEC and IEC standards.

Cable Pulling Techniques

A smooth cable pull is essential to prevent jacket abrasion and conductor damage. Use rollers, sheaves, and pulling lubricants for long runs, and plan the pull to minimize bends. Monitor tension during the pull to avoid overstressing cables.

Maintain the minimum bend radius as specified by the manufacturer to prevent insulation damage.

Securing and Organizing Cables

Once cables are in the tray, use cable ties, straps, or clamps to maintain organization and spacing. Avoid over-tightening ties, which can deform cable jackets. In plenum spaces, select tie materials that comply with NEC requirements.

Maintain consistent spacing along the tray to prevent sagging and ensure proper airflow.

Cable Segregation and Bundling

Group cables according to type and function. Power, control, and data cables should be separated to reduce electromagnetic interference. For instrumentation or sensitive control cables, consider additional protective measures such as smaller sub-trays or channel trays.

Ampacity and Fill Considerations

Do not overfill trays. Calculate the total cross-sectional area of all cables and compare it to the tray's maximum fill capacity according to NEC Table 392. 22.

High-density fills may require ampacity derating to maintain safe current-carrying capacity.

Grounding and Bonding

For metal trays, ensure proper grounding and bonding across tray sections to maintain electrical continuity and safety. Use bonding jumpers where necessary to prevent potential differences between tray sections.

Maintenance and Labeling

Label cables clearly for identification and future maintenance. Leave sufficient slack for expansion or adjustments. Regularly inspect trays for sagging, damaged ties, or cable wear to maintain long-term reliability.

By following these practices, cable routing after tray installation will be organized, safe, and compliant, reducing the risk of damage, interference, and operational issues.
