How to wire a power outage relay

A power outage relay is wired by connecting its coil to a control circuit and its contacts to the load and power source, ensuring it switches automatically during a power failure.

Understanding the Relay

A relay acts as a remote-controlled switch, allowing a low-power signal to control a higher-power circuit. It typically has: Coil terminals (often labeled 85 and 86) that receive the control signalContact terminals (commonly 30, 87, and 87a) that switch the load on or off In a power outage relay, the coil senses the mains power status, and the contacts switch the emergency load, such as lighting, to a backup source like a battery.

Wiring Steps

Identify Terminals: Check the relay's datasheet or markings. Coil terminals are usually labeled, and contact terminals include common (COM), normally open (NO), and normally closed (NC),. Connect the Coil: One coil terminal connects to a control voltage or mains sensing circuit.

The other coil terminal is grounded or connected to the return path of the control circuit. Connect the Load: The common terminal (30) connects to the power source. The normally open terminal (87) connects to the device or emergency load.

If using 87a (normally closed), the load receives power when the relay is not energized. Integrate Backup Power: For emergency lighting, connect a battery or secondary power source to the relay so that when mains power fails, the relay switches to the backup automatically. Verify Circuit Protection: Include fuses or circuit breakers to protect both the relay and the load from overcurrent.

Test the System: Simulate a power outage to ensure the relay switches correctly and the load is powered by the backup source.

Safety Considerations

Always match the relay's coil voltage to the control circuit voltage. Ensure the relay's contact rating exceeds the load current. Use insulated connectors and follow local electrical codes.

De-energize circuits before wiring to prevent shock or damage. By following these steps, a power outage relay can reliably switch loads to a backup source during a power failure, ensuring continuous operation of critical systems like emergency lighting.
