Optical power of the optical transmission module

Optical power in an optical transmission module refers to the intensity of light emitted by the transmitter, typically measured as average transmit power in W, mW, or dBm, and is critical for signal quality and transmission distance.

Definition and Measurement

The average optical power is the optical power output by the module's transmitter under normal operating conditions, representing the luminous intensity of the emitted light. It is measured when transmitting a pseudo-random sequence of data, where the number of "1"s and "0"s is roughly equal, providing a representative average power level in units of W, mW, or dBm, with dBm being the logarithmic unit commonly used in communications. The extinction ratio is another key parameter, defined as the ratio of the average optical power when transmitting all "1"s to the average power when transmitting all "0"s.

A higher extinction ratio indicates better distinction between logical "1" and "0" signals, reducing bit error rates and improving signal quality.

Operational Significance

Optical power directly affects the transmission distance, signal quality, and service life of the optical module. If the transmit power is too low, the receiver may not detect the signal properly, causing packet loss or link failure. Conversely, excessive transmit power can overload the receiver, potentially damaging the module or causing data errors.

Optical modules often include automatic power control (APC) circuits to maintain stable output power, ensuring consistent performance even under varying conditions. The receive power at the opposite end must also fall within a specified range to maintain reliable communication, and attenuators may be used to adjust power levels in low-loss fiber links.

Units and Typical Values

Linear units: Watts (W) or milliwatts (mW)Logarithmic unit: dBm (decibels relative to 1 mW)Typical transmit power ranges depend on module type (e.g., SFP, SFP+, QSFP) and distance specifications, often provided in the module datasheet.

Monitoring and Troubleshooting

Modern optical modules support Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), allowing real-time measurement of transmit and receive optical power. Abnormal power readings can indicate module failure, dirty connectors, or fiber damage, and help in network troubleshooting. In summary, optical power is a fundamental parameter of optical transmission modules, determining the efficiency, reliability, and safety of optical communication links.

Proper monitoring and adherence to specified power ranges are essential for optimal network performance.
