Optical Module Half-Duplex and Full-Duplex

Full-duplex optical modules can transmit and receive data simultaneously using two separate fibers, while half-duplex optical modules transmit and receive data on a single fiber but only in one direction at a time.

Full-

Duplex Optical ModulesFull-duplex optical modules use two separate transmission lines—one for sending and one for receiving data—allowing simultaneous bidirectional communication. This is analogous to a two-lane highway, where traffic flows in both directions at the same time. Full-duplex modules are commonly used in modern network equipment such as switches, servers, and transceivers, providing higher throughput and lower latency because data can flow continuously without waiting for the channel to switch direction.

They are typically paired with duplex fiber patch cords.

Half-

Duplex Optical ModulesHalf-duplex optical modules, also called BIDI (bi-directional) modules, use a single fiber for both transmitting and receiving, but only one direction of data transfer occurs at a time. After sending data, the module switches to receive mode, introducing a line turnaround time before the other side can transmit. This is similar to a single-track railway, where only one train can occupy the track at a time.

Half-duplex modules are useful in scenarios where fiber resources are limited or cost constraints exist, but they have lower effective bandwidth compared to full-duplex modules. Half-duplex: Used in BIDI links, long-distance single-fiber deployments, or legacy systems where fiber count is constrained. Understanding the choice between half-duplex and full-duplex optical modules is crucial for network design, ensuring optimal performance, cost efficiency, and compatibility with existing infrastructure.
