Bending Plastic Cable Trays

Plastic cable trays can be bent on-site using proper marking, cutting, and bending techniques with the right tools to achieve precise angles without damaging the tray.

Tools and Preparation

Before bending, gather the necessary tools: a measuring tape, marker or chalk, hand gloves, pliers, and a cable tray bender suitable for the tray material and size. Inspect the tray for cracks, dents, or defects and clean it thoroughly to remove dirt or moisture, ensuring accurate bends and preventing damage.

Marking and Measuring

Mark the bend location clearly on the tray using a marker or chalk. Determine the desired angle (e.g., 90°, 45°) and the type of bend: horizontal, vertical, offset, or T-junction. For flat 90° bends, measure the tray lip to be removed—typically 2¾ of the tray width, split evenly on both sides of the center line.

Cutting and Preparing the Tray

Use a bolt cutter or cable cutter for wire mesh trays, or a hand grinder/file for solid plastic trays to remove the tray lip at the bend point. Cut along the center line carefully to avoid the tray opening or cracking. Flatten the tray lip at the bend point using a blunt object to prepare for bending.

Bending Process

Apply even pressure to bend the tray to the desired angle. For vertical bends, ensure the tray is supported to prevent deformation. For complex bends like tees or offsets, bend each section sequentially, checking alignment frequently.

After bending, secure the tray with bolts or gussets if necessary to maintain structural integrity.

Safety Tips

Always wear hand gloves and eye protection when cutting or bending. Avoid forcing the tray, as excessive pressure can cause cracks or permanent deformation. Work on a stable surface and support the tray to prevent accidental drops or damage.

By following these steps, you can create professional, precise bends in plastic cable trays on-site without needing pre-fabricated fittings, saving time and cost while maintaining cable routing efficiency.
