The function of a fault relay is

A fault relay is a protective device that detects abnormal current flow, such as earth or ground faults, and triggers circuit breakers to isolate the faulty section, preventing equipment damage and hazards.

Definition and Purpose

A fault relay, often called an earth fault relay or ground fault relay, is designed to monitor electrical circuits for unintended connections between live conductors and the earth. Such faults can occur due to insulation breakdown, moisture, aging cables, or equipment failure, and may lead to overheating, fires, or electric shock. The relay detects these abnormal currents and sends a signal to trip a circuit breaker, isolating the affected section almost instantly to protect both equipment and personnel.

How It Works

Fault relays operate by sensing imbalances in current. In a balanced three-phase system, the sum of currents in all phases is zero. When a fault occurs, some current leaks to the ground, creating a residual current.

This imbalance is detected by a current transformer (CT) or a core-balance CT (CBCT) surrounding the conductors. Once the residual current exceeds a preset threshold, the relay activates its output to trip the breaker. The operation involves three main steps: Sensing – The relay continuously monitors current flow.

Evaluation – It compares the measured residual current against a set threshold. Action – If the threshold is exceeded, it signals the breaker to disconnect the faulty section.

Applications

Fault relays are widely used in: Industrial plants and commercial buildingsDistribution networks and substationsTransformers and generator systems They are particularly important in high-voltage and high-current systems, where they protect equipment rather than directly safeguarding humans, unlike RCCBs which are primarily for human protection.

Key Advantages

Rapid fault detection and isolationPrevention of equipment damage and downtimeEnhanced system stability and safetyCompatibility with various voltage levels and system types, including AC, DC, and resistance-grounded systems Testing and MaintenanceTo ensure proper operation, fault relays can be tested using: Primary injection tests – simulate actual fault currents through the system. Secondary injection tests – inject known currents directly into the relay to verify settings and tripping accuracy. Regular inspection and testing help maintain reliability and prevent relay failure due to environmental factors like moisture, dust, or temperature extremes.
