Relay Protection Current and Voltage

Protective relays can operate based on either current or voltage, depending on the type and purpose of the relay.

Current Protection Relays

Most protective relays in power systems are current-based, designed to detect abnormal current conditions such as overcurrent, short circuits, or ground faults. These relays monitor the current flowing through a circuit via current transformers (CTs) and trip circuit breakers when the current exceeds a preset threshold, isolating the faulty section to protect equipment and maintain system stability. Examples include overcurrent relays, differential relays, and directional relays.

Voltage Protection Relays

Some relays are voltage-based, monitoring the voltage levels in a system to prevent damage from overvoltage or undervoltage conditions. These relays use potential transformers (PTs) to sense voltage and trip the breaker if the voltage deviates beyond preset limits. Voltage relays are particularly important for protecting generators, transformers, and sensitive industrial equipment.

Summary

Current protection relays respond to excessive or abnormal current and are the most common type in power system protection. Voltage protection relays respond to abnormal voltage levels and are used where voltage stability is critical. Many modern microprocessor-based relays combine both current and voltage protection functions, providing multifunctional protection in a single device.

In conclusion, relay protection is not limited to one type; it can be current protection, voltage protection, or a combination, depending on the system requirements and the specific relay design.
