How to use the optical module patch cord

To connect a patch cord to an optical module, ensure compatibility in fiber type, connector type, endface, and polarity, then align and insert the female connector into the module's male interface. Step 1: Verify CompatibilityFiber Type: Match the patch cord to the optical module's fiber type. Use single-mode (OS2) for long-distance connections and multi-mode (OM3/OM4/OM5) for short-distance or high-bandwidth applications.

Never mix single-mode and multi-mode fibers, as this can cause signal loss or damage. Connector Type: Common interfaces include LC, SC, FC, ST, and MPO/MTP.

LC and MP

O are widely used for modern high-speed networks. Endface Type: Ensure the patch cord's endface matches the module's requirement: PC, UPC, or APC.

AP

C is recommended for long-distance or reflection-sensitive applications. Step 2: Check Connector GenderOptical modules typically have male interfaces with pins. Use a female patch cord (without pins) to ensure a secure connection and proper optical signal transmission.

Step 3: Align and InsertHold the patch cord by the connector body, not the fiber, to avoid damage. Align the connector key with the module slot and gently insert until it clicks or locks in place.

For MP

O patch cords, ensure correct polarity (Type A, B, or C) depending on the module configuration to maintain proper signal routing. Step 4: Secure and TestConfirm the connection is snug and the latch is engaged. Test the link for signal integrity using an optical power meter or network device to ensure proper transmission.

Additional Tips

Cable Jacket and Diameter: Choose 2. 0mm for flexibility in high-density racks or 3. 0mm for mechanical protection.

Quality: Use high-quality, low-loss patch cords to maintain network performance and reduce bit error rates. Parallel Modules: For 40G/100G MPO modules, follow the recommended Type A or Type B patch cord and adapter configuration to simplify polarity management. By following these steps and ensuring proper matching of fiber type, connector type, endface, and polarity, you can achieve a reliable and high-performance connection between a patch cord and an optical module.
