Outdoor Fiber Optic Multimode

Multimode outdoor fiber optic cables are designed for short- to medium-distance data transmission with multiple light paths, offering durability against environmental conditions like UV exposure, moisture, and temperature fluctuations.

Overview of Multimode Fiber

Multimode fiber (MMF) allows multiple light modes to propagate through a larger core, typically 50 or 62. 5 microns, making it ideal for LAN, campus, and data center applications over shorter distances compared to single-mode fiber.

MM

F supports high-speed data transmission, with maximum distances depending on the fiber type and data rate. For example, OM1 supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 33 meters, while OM4 can reach 550 meters at 10 Gigabit speeds. Common Multimode TypesOM1: 62.

5 µm core, orange jacket, LED light source, suitable for 100 Megabit Ethernet and short-distance 10 Gigabit Ethernet. OM2: 50 µm core, orange jacket, LED source, supports 1–10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 82 meters. OM3: 50 µm core, aqua jacket, optimized for laser-based equipment, supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 300 meters and 40/100 Gigabit up to 100 meters.

OM4: 50 µm core, aqua jacket, enhanced for VCSEL lasers, supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 550 meters. OM5: Wideband multimode fiber, designed for shortwave wavelength division multiplexing (SWDM), enabling higher data rates over the same distance.

Outdoor Fiber Considerations

Outdoor multimode fiber cables are engineered to withstand harsh environmental conditions. They may be installed aerially on poles, in underground ducts, or directly buried, and are often UV-resistant, water-resistant, and temperature-tolerant. Some outdoor cables are self-supporting, eliminating the need for additional messenger wires, while others are designed for duct installation using air-blown or jetted methods.

Construction Features

Jacket Material: Typically black or colored for UV protection and identification. Buffering: Tight-buffered or loose-tube designs to protect fibers from mechanical stress. Armoring: Optional metal or Kevlar layers for rodent protection and added tensile strength.

Connectors: Common terminations include LC or SC connectors, often in duplex configurations for multimode applications.

Applications

Campus networks connecting buildings over short to medium distances. Data centers requiring high-speed interconnects. Telecom and enterprise backbones where multimode fiber is sufficient for the required distance.

Outdoor installations exposed to weather, UV, or mechanical stress.

Summary

Choosing the right multimode outdoor fiber depends on distance, data rate, and environmental conditions. OM1 and OM2 are suitable for shorter, lower-speed links, while OM3 and OM4 are preferred for higher-speed applications. Outdoor-rated cables ensure durability and reliability in challenging environments, making them ideal for aerial, duct, or direct-burial installations.
