Butterfly-shaped optical cable laying method

Butterfly-shaped optical cables are laid flat along walls, conduits, or trays, with careful attention to bend radius, splicing, and mechanical protection to ensure minimal stress on the fiber core. Cable Structure and AdvantagesButterfly-shaped optical cables feature a flat, wing-like cross-section with optical fibers at the center, flanked by two parallel strength members, typically FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) or steel wires. This design provides mechanical strength, flexibility, and reduced bending stress, making them ideal for FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) deployments and indoor/outdoor drop cable installations.

The outer sheath is usually LSZH or PVC, chosen based on fire safety and environmental requirements. The flat profile prevents rolling and twisting during installation, simplifying routing along walls, corners, and conduits. Laying and Installation TechniquesFlat-Plane Routing: Always bend the cable along its flat plane rather than edge-on.

This minimizes stress on the fiber core and prevents kinks. Minimum Bend Radius: Maintain the manufacturer-specified minimum bend radius, especially at terminations, corners, and entry points to ONTs or wall outlets. Cable Stripping: Use a dedicated drop cable stripper for removing the outer sheath.

Avoid generic cutters that can nick the fiber coating, which increases insertion loss.

Pre-

Installation Testing: Perform OTDR or continuity tests on the cable reel before pulling to ensure fiber integrity. Testing after installation only identifies faults, whereas pre-testing prevents unnecessary troubleshooting. Mechanical Protection: Use flat-cable-compatible clamps and avoid forcing the cable into sharp angles.

For outdoor feeder segments, select cables with UV-resistant PE jackets or armored variants for direct-burial or aerial runs.

Splicing and Termination

Fusion Splicing: Preferred for permanent, low-loss connections. Align bare fiber ends and fuse using a high-voltage arc. Mechanical Splicing: Suitable for temporary or field connections.

Fibers are aligned and held in a connector without heat. Direct Termination: Some butterfly cables allow direct connectorization for quick deployment in FTTH networks.

Best Practices

Match the cable variant to the installation environment (indoor, outdoor, aerial, or conduit) and verify fiber type (e.g., G. 657A1 or A2) for bend resistance. Avoid rolling or twisting the cable during pulling to reduce labor and installation time.

Ensure proper tension control during pulling to prevent microbends or fiber damage. By following these methods, butterfly-shaped optical cables can be efficiently deployed with minimal signal loss, mechanical stress, and installation errors, making them highly suitable for modern fiber access networks.
