Sri Lanka Fiber Optic Communication Power Grounding

Sri Lanka's fiber optic networks rely on robust grounding and power management, but recent floods and landslides have exposed vulnerabilities in both infrastructure and resilience planning.

Current Challenges in Fiber Optic Networks

Sri Lanka's fiber optic communication infrastructure has faced significant disruptions due to natural disasters and power outages. Recent floods and landslides damaged key fiber routes in areas like Kadugannawa, Wattala, and Kurunegala–Chilaw, causing widespread internet and mobile service interruptions. Even undamaged towers were rendered inactive due to power instability, highlighting the sector's dependence on the national electricity grid.

Restoration efforts often require coordination between telecom operators, government agencies, and emergency services, with some areas remaining inaccessible due to terrain and flooding.

Power Grounding and Network Resilience

Proper power grounding is critical for fiber optic networks to prevent damage from electrical surges, lightning strikes, and grid fluctuations. In Sri Lanka, many towers and switching centers are vulnerable because of low-lying fiber routes, insufficient waterproofing, and limited battery backup. Grounding systems typically include: Earthing rods and grounding grids at base stations to safely dissipate electrical surges.

Surge protection devices integrated into fiber repeaters and switching equipment. Battery backups and generators to maintain operations during grid outages, though current deployments are often insufficient for prolonged disruptions. The lack of standardized grounding and redundancy has been a key factor in cascading failures during extreme weather events.

Technological Innovations for Enhanced Reliability

Sri Lanka is exploring next-generation fiber technologies to improve both capacity and resilience: Space-Division Multiplexing (SDM) with multi-core fibers allows multiple data streams through a single fiber, increasing bandwidth without extensive new deployments. Hollow-core fibers reduce latency and signal loss, which is critical for real-time applications like e-health and smart city projects. Smart fibers with integrated sensing (Distributed Acoustic Sensing and Distributed Temperature Sensing) can monitor vibrations, temperature changes, and structural stress, enabling predictive maintenance and early detection of potential failures.

These innovations, combined with improved grounding and power management, can enhance the climate resilience and operational reliability of Sri Lanka's fiber optic networks.

Recommendations for Strengthening Fiber Infrastructure

Standardize grounding and surge protection across all fiber optic installations. Increase battery backup duration and deploy emergency generators at critical nodes. Elevate and waterproof fiber routes in flood-prone areas.

Integrate smart sensing technologies to monitor network health in real time. Develop redundancy in fiber corridors to ensure alternative routing during outages. By addressing both power grounding and network design vulnerabilities, Sri Lanka can reduce the impact of natural disasters on its digital infrastructure and support the growing demand for high-speed, reliable connectivity.
